Sport Climbing Venues

These are mainly concentrated on the outcrops around the central section of Scotland. They are found on old quarries near some of the cities and towns as well as on natural outcrops in the foothills of the Highlands. Near Edinburgh there is only one sport climbing venue - North Berwick Law Quarry. Around Glasgow there are a number of small quarries offering extremely steep and difficult sport routes, particularly at Dumbuck and Dumbarton. There is a collection of quarries in the countryside around the city of Dundee. They are all on sandstone. In Perthshire there are several good venues just north of the town of Perth. The most popular is Craig a Barns near Dunkeld. Just a little further north near the small town of Aberfeldy is Weem Rock of excellent quality Schist. Just to the west of Perth is Glen Ogle. This has become one of the most important sport climbing areas in Scotland with over 200 routes situated either side of the road. The crags are all short (8m - 10m).
