Safety and Liability - Guidance for Clubs

The MCofS often receives inquiries from clubs concerning possible liability in respect of club meets and the informal tuition of members. In 1997/8 the council published two papers: “Guidance on Safety and Liability for Clubs and Other Organisations” and “The Organisation of Club Affairs”. These documents now need to be updated and a draft has been produced which combines both of the earlier versions.

The MCofS firmly believes that one of the best ways to learn about safe practice in the hills is to learn from more experienced walkers, mountaineers and climbers, and that one of the great strengths of clubs is that they enable these skills to be passed on. In this respect the guidance notes will be particularly useful to new clubs, clubs with a high proportion of young members and clubs that take an active role in introducing novices to mountaineering and climbing. These notes will also provide useful information to members who visit the hills in informal groups.

The intention of the notes is not to cause clubs to constrain their activities but to allow clubs to manage their affairs in such a way as to help minimise any possible liability in the unfortunate event of a member having an accident.

This is an important document. Members of clubs must be made aware of the contents of the final document. Prior to publication we would urge club office bearers to encourage their members to study the draft and send any comments to the office.  The draft can be viewed here in PDF format. If anyone would like a hard copy, please contact the office.

Please send any comments to the office marked for the attention of David Gibson, MCofS Senior Officer or email to davidg@mountaineering-scotland.org.uk
