Content
The MCofS publishes a Newsletter with articles and information on what is happening in the Scottish mountaineering, climbing, cross-country skiing and walking world. Subjects range from safety issues, access and conservation issues, ethics, campaign news and general information. There are book reviews, competitions, accommodation information, adverts for special deals for MCofS members. There is a letters page known as 'Bivvy Talk', a Gaelic column, regular Features section and guest articles from conservation organisations. Training news from the SMLTB for outdoor providers is also regularly featured. The information below is for contributors and advertisers.
Frequency
Four issues are published each year.
Format & Distribution
The newsletter is printed in A4 format, in full colour. The print run is 12,000 copies and it is distributed to all the members of 132 Scottish Clubs (containing 6500 members), to Associate Members and direct to over 1800 Individual Members. Copies are sold through a selection of outdoor equipment shops and through popular newsagents across Scotland at a cover price of £2.95.
Book Reviews
Publishers should send a review copy to the National Officer of the MCofS. Executive members or outdoor personalities will review the books. These copies are then placed in the MCofS reference library in the office for reference by the MCofS Officers and members.

Contributions
The MCofS are allways keen to receive contributions from members and other organisations; either as news items or discussion articles on pertinent issues concerning mountaineering and the Scottish hills, or general interest articles about member's activities. See 'Information for Contributors' for more detail and deadlines.
The MCofS cannot pay for contributions although a small fee is paid for the use of photos.

The newsletter is compiled by the National Officer with the main contributions coming from the Access & Conservation Officer, the Mountain Safety Advicsor and the Administration Assistant. The text is edited by the National Officer and suplied to the printers for page setting and publication and it is important that all contributions follow the following guidlines.
Style and format of editorial contributions
- Typed on disc, either Microsoft Word 7 or as a text file or -
- on paper, double spaced and single sided A4
Supply only as text in the following style:
- 12pt font size
- Times New Roman Font - this can be changed at pagesetting stage
- Normal font style only
- Normal paragraph style only
- allow 1 space only at the start of a new sentance, after a full-stop
- Headings should be in 14pt Sentence-case
Please Do Not use:
- shading
- boxing
- colours
- Font styles such as bold, italics or underlined
- superscript or other line styles
- indents
It is acceptable to use:
- bulleted text to highlight points
Type and style of photographic contributions:
- Slide Transparancies
- Colour Prints - any size
- On disc - bmp,tiff,jpeg.
Quality
- Sharp images - out of focus shots will not be used
- good contrast
- good colour saturation
- light images - if too dark it will not reproduce, if too bright colour is faded
- vertical format better for front covers
- photos of people are better in portrait style
