The Mountaineering Council of Scotland

1st Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival

Wednesday 8th & Thursday 9th October 2003 at the Caledonian Brewery, Slateford Road, Edinburgh (where the ceilidhs are!). Doors open at 6pm each night, with the show starting at 7pm. The Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival will be a celebration of mountaineering, skiing and snowboarding, kayaking and canoeing, and other mountain sports.

Each night, there will be 3 or 4 short films shown about climbing, skiing, snowboarding and kayaking. Many were filmed in Scotland and will be introduced by the film maker. After about 90 minutes of films, there will be an interval with a raffle to raise money for the Mountain Rescue Service. After the interval, we will welcome a guest speaker, who will give a slide show presentation.

On Wednesday, the speaker is Scott Muir, who is one of Britain's leading climbers and will regale us with his exciting tales of hanging on to whatever is available - be it ice, rock or whatever. On Thursday, the speaker is Jamie Andrew. Jamie was one of the leading climbers in the UK before a horrible accident in the Alps led to him losing both his hands and feet to frostbite. Jamie has fought back and became the first quadruple amputee to climb Ben Nevis. His presentation will be a remarkable story of tragedy and triumph, of never giving up. It will be an inspirational evening. As well as this, throughout the festival there will be mountain photography displays by Dave 'Cubby' Cuthbertson and others, and a selection of mountain poetry by members of the John Muir Trust.

Tickets for the festival are £8 each night (£6 concessions) or you can buy a ticket for both nights for £15. Tickets are available from Edinburgh branches of Tiso and the Alien Rock climbing centres.

Anyone interested in submitting a film or poem to the festival should contact the organiser by email.
