The Mountaineering Council of Scotland

Election Special

To help mountaineers decide whom to vote for the MCofS decided to organise a Mountain Issues Election Hustings in which we put the same question to each of the parties, and asked them to answer in no more than 300 words. We have been totally fair and equitable in our treatment of each party. They were all sent the same letter on the same day and given the same deadline. Furthermore, we are making no comment on their responses, just printing them as received for you to read and draw your own conclusions. So here's the question:

"What would your party do to promote the increased protection of Scottish mountains during the next term of the Scottish Parliament, and what importance do you place on people's enjoyment and appreciation of our finest mountain areas?"

And their answers:
Scottish Green Party Scottish National Party Scottish Conservatives
Scottish Socialist Party Scottish Liberal Democrats Scottish Labour Party

Scottish National Party

Scotland's mountain areas are a natural asset to be proud of - an asset that we must protect and enhance for all to enjoy now, and for generations to come. The measures set out below offer some examples of how our legislative programme in the next term of the Scottish Parliament will reflect these values.

We want to actively promote an appreciation of our mountains, and guarding the public right of access in the Land Reform Bill is vital to achieving this aim. There are strong local Authority powers in the bill to maintain and promote access, but the resources provided to Local Authorities for this purpose are insufficient. Previous countryside legislation has failed for lack of resources and this must not happen to the Land Reform Bill.

The SNP will also create a 'Return to Scotland' strategy, similar to programmes in Ireland, France and Sweden, which will encourage young people to get out and about in our country and find out what it offers them. Thus promoting an appreciation of our mountains and other scenery.

Positive action to protect our mountains is also essential. We would like to see the inclusion of Highland Perthshire into the Cairngorms National Park, particularly to strengthen the case for making this National Park a World Heritage Site.

The SNP recognise concerns over developments like wind farms, which can impact on the scenic value of an area. Therefore, we will initiate a national consultation process to develop new planning guidelines. We will instruct Local Authorities to proactively provide communities and potential developers with clear advice on where best to locate wind farms and to identify the areas in which such developments will not be considered.
