The expeditions listed below benefited from the Sportscotland grant,
administered by the MCofS.

1997
Himachal Pradesh. India.

Scottish Himalaya Expedition.
(The Throne.)

This successful expedition was the first to scale the Throne's north face.

 

1997
Himalayas. Nepal.

Tharpu Saltire Expedition

This Forces team came very close to ascent, but the true objectives; team building, mountain survival training, and experience gained, were all achieved.

South Greenland.

The Scottish Torssuqatoq Spires Expedition

This team made an ascent of Magic Arrow Spire. The expedition also made extensive study material for geography students.

 

1997
Bolivian Andes.

Edinburgh University M C Apolobamba Expedition

This team of six achieved several first, and first British ascents of peaks up to 6348m.

 

1997
South Greenland

Scottish South Greenland Expedition.

This expedition achieved several first ascents in this area, but a planned traverse of the south Greenland ice cap was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

 

1997
Himalayas. Nepal.

British Pumori Expedition

The team of seven set out to climb the 7145m Mt Pumori via the south east ridge, but adverse weather conditions saw them get no higher than 6200m.

 

1998
Karakoram. Pakistan.

Scottish Savoia Kangri Expedition

This well equipped team of seven spent two months on the mountain. they came within 300m of the summit, but had to withdraw as the provisions ran low.

Cordilleras. Bolivia.

Galloway Andean Expedition

This daring duo took on eight peaks within a month! only two eluded them. They achieved an impressive list of firsts.

 

1998
Cordillera Quimsa Cruz. Bolivia.

Scottish Bolivia.

The aim of this expedition was to explore and climb new routes in the Cordillera Quimsa Cruz range. They excelled in this, and future climbers will be glad they did so well.

 

1999
Bolivian Andes.

Edinburgh University M C Bolivia '99.

A four-man team from the University climbed in the Condoriri, Apolobamba, Illampu and Arca Quimsa Cruz areas. One of the team was struck by falling rock, suffering a fractured skull, and returned home. The remaining team met up with other climbers in the area and completed 17 climbs from D to AD including 6 possible first ascents.

 

1999
Central Karakoram Pakistan.

Scottish Latok III Expedition

An alpine style attempt on this superb unclimbed steep mixed rock spur was unsuccessful due to unjustifiably dangerous avalanche hazard on the approach. However, The team made successful ascents of Biacherahi Tower (5800m) by the NW Ridge (1st British Ascent); The Indian (Doug Scott) Spur (5000m) by a new line on the West Wall; and Hanispur (6047m) by the North Ridge and believed to be a first ascent.

 

1999
South East Greenland.

Scottish Greenland Expedition.

Malcolm Thorburn and Douglas Campbell made a ski crossing from the western ice cap to the east and made the first ascents of four unclimbed peaks up to 2,300m. The routes were no more than PD in standard and varied from 200m - 600m. Two further ascents of peaks first ascended in 1997 were made at the end of the trip.
