Nesting Bird Warnings

2007
Further to the note below, the nest on Torr Nead an Eoin NR949493 is currently occupied. Nesting is likely to continue until the end of July, but be vigilant during the start of August, and willing to retreat.

2006
It has been reported that a schedule 1 bird is currently nesting on Torr Nead an Eoin, on the Isle of Arran, close to the route Aquilla. It is probably best to avoid the crag until July as climbing on any of the routes at the crag would disturb the nesting bird.

2005
Peregrines are reported to be nesting on the Direct Route on Twin Cracks Buttress on Clifton Crag, Dumfries-shire. It is suggested that climbers avoid climbing on Twin Cracks Buttress until after 30th June.

Other Galloway Mountain crags that have restrictions are:
Peregrines: Loch Grannoch Crag, Craigdews (aka the Goat Park), and Craigencallie. All restructed 15th February - 30th June
Eagles: The Tauchers - 15th February - 31st July

2004
We are advised that there is a peregrine falcon nest on Clachnaben, near Banchory, although it has not been made clear to us which routes are affected.

Golden eagles reported to be nesting at the end of the main pitch of the classic route Stone on Sron Ulladale on Harris. As it is unavoidable, climbers should not climb the route meantime as they will be disturbing the nest.

Climbers should bear in mind the MCofS advice: take care not to directly disturb the nest and climb on sections of the crag that are out of sight or to one side.

The following crags had Schedule 1 birds nesting in previous years and climbers should particularly follow MCofS guidance at these sites, or look out for local Police Wildlife Liaison Officer's advice. Many sites are monitored by Raptor Study Groups:
Clints of Dromore (climbing is being discouraged on all crags until late July)
Glen Afton (Stayamrie Wall sometimes holds an occupied nest)
Loudoun Hill (Eastern Buttress is often occupied and constantly watched, and look out for ravens elsewhere)
Glen Ogle (look out for activity round 'White Wall')
Creag Mac Ranaich (there is a nest in the centre of the crag)
Ardnamurchan Ring (birds choose between Meall an Fhireon and Meall Meadhoin each year so alter your plans accordingly)
The Camel - Creag nan Clag - a newly developed sport venue (where local residents and study groups ask climbers to refrain until after July)
