The Mountaineering Council of Scotland

The Board, Executive and Committees

The Board

The Board of directors comprises the President, four Vice Presidents and the Treasurer. Directors are elected by members at an Annual General Meeting (AGM), and have specific responsibilities for the management of the affairs of the Council.

The various responsibilities of The Board are set out in the Articles of Association. Key responsibilities are for staffing, to ensure that the company is effectively managed and that statutory and fiscal requirements are met.

The Executive and Committees

The six directors are also members of the Executive, which also has a maximum of nine further members elected at an AGM. The Executive is empowered to approve the strategy and Corporate Plan of the Council and to oversee the work of the four Committees responsible for Council activities in Membership Services, Mountain Safety, Access & Conservation and Sports Development. The four Committees are responsible for the development and delivery of the Corporate Plan and related work programmes.

Each Committee is chaired by a Vice President to ensure that there is effective communication and continuity at Board, Executive and committee level. Committees usually have at least one elected member of the Executive in addition to the Chair. Other volunteers and specialists are co-opted.

The Board, Executive and individual Committees each meet a minimum of four times a year.

Working Groups

The MCofS uses working groups which are established to deal with specific issues. These change from time to time and currently include:

The Huts Working Group
The group was established to investigate and understand relevant issues concerning club huts and other forms of mountaineering accommodation, and to inform club representatives concerning trends and changes in legislation and other matters concerning good practice. The current chair is John Leftley.

The Fundraising Group
Formed in 2007, the group exists to help the Council identify additional sources of funding, which may be from charitable trusts, sponsorship, and other funds. The current chair is Brenda Clough.

The Staff

Seven employees of the Council are responsible for the implementation of Council policy. They include the Senior Officer, Development Officer, Access and Conservation Officer and the Mountain Safety Adviser.

Office staff include Reception, Database and Bookkeeping administrative staff who are responsible for keeping membership records and correspondence up to date, and for handling general enquiries from members, the public and other organisations.
