Campaigns

Throughout the history of the MCofS, since its beginnings in 1970, its volunteers have campaigned on behalf of mountaineers and walkers on numerous issues concerning the Scottish hills. For a full discourse watch out for the 'History' page on this website soon.

From 1970 to 1989 all this work was done from the homes of the Executive volunteers, but was none the less very effective. Often in partnership with other voluntary organisations the MCofS won some major battles including the prevention of ski expansion into Lurchers Gully on Cairngorm in 1993.

In 1989, the employment of a National Officer allowed a more centralised approach to campaign work and in 1995 the employment of an Access & Conservation Officer gave MCofS the staff to allow more dedicated time, with backup by volunteers, to major campaigns.
