The Mountaineering Council of Scotland

WHO WE ARE

The MCofS is run and organised by volunteers and exists to represent mountaineering in Scotland, by protecting, informing and developing the interests of hill walkers, climbers and ski-tourers

MCofS BACKGROUND
The MCofS was formed in 1970 by the Association of Scottish Climbing Clubs to represent the views of the mountaineers of Scotland.

There are 127 ‘Club Members’ which have more than 7,000 members; and 2,600 individual members. The majority of the Council's income is derived from membership subscriptions, and in part by investment from sportscotland in recognition of its role as the Representative Body for Mountaineering. Other investment from Scottish Natural Heritage, the British Mountaineering Council and The Scottish Mountaineering Trust help us to employ an Access and Conservation Officer.

The majority of the Council's income is derived from Club and Individual membership subscriptions.

The aims of the MCofS are:

  • To act as the representative body for hill walkers, climbers and ski-tourers
  • To protect the ethos of mountaineering in Scotland
  • To safeguard and secure access to hill and crag
  • To protect the mountain environment
  • To initiate and encourage safe practice in the mountains
  • To promote the views and interests of its members
  • To co-operate with other organisations with common interests
